New Safety Norms Considered in India Following Nepal Earthquake
The recent earthquake in Nepal has brought earthquake safety norms into focus in India, where high-rises above 20 and 30 floors are quickly becoming the norm. Most buildings in India today use the minimum structural safety standards allowable by law. The Bureau of Indian Standards has agreed to draft a new code for seismic standards this year.
Proposed Superslim in New York City to Feature Floating Skygardens
A new 41-story skyscraper will feature six gaps in the façade—each filled with a full-floor, canopied green space that will wrap around the core of the tower. Floor plates will be one-third the size of those in 432 Park Avenue. The concept represents a challenge for the engineers and architects, who plan to construct the building with limited structural support around the perimeter.
Design Unveiled for Giant Rotterdam Wind Turbine
The 40-story building under construction at 888 Collins Street, Victoria Harbour, will be linked to the Bureau of Meteorology and light up every half-hour in a dazzling display that changes with the current weather. The tower will be illuminated by 50-meter-high vertical beams of LED light.
Antalya Tower to be Built in Turkey
Construction is due to commence later in 2015 on Antalya Tower, the winning entry of “The Expo 2016 Antalya Tower” competition. The completion of the observation tower will coincide with the “World Botanic Expo 2016,” to be held in the city. The tower is tripartite in form, comprised of three panoramic rooftop viewing decks tapering into a single shaft at the building’s base.
Construction Underway on Shenzhen Mixed-Use Tower
Construction is underway on a new tower in Shenzhen. The Hanking Center Tower was designed with the goal of rethinking the traditional commercial office building through an innovative approach to circulation, social, and work spaces. When completed, the tower will house retail, office, and residential space, with communal areas for use by all tenants.
UK’s Tallest Residential Tower Gets Final Green Light in London
Planning permission has been given for what would be the United Kingdom’s tallest residential building, to be sited in London Docklands. A 68-story and 36-story complex will be built, with construction expected to start in July 2016. The architects’ proposal has been dropped in height from the originally planned 73 floors.
