Housing is the biggest driver behind this appetite for tall buildings. Safdie Architects’ Sky Habitat Nears Completion In Singapore A new residential development is nearing completion in Singapore. Sky habitat is a 38-story complex representative of the high-density, high-rise housing that remains in great demand across Asia. The scheme is formed of two staggered tower blocks linked at the base, and then via three skybridges. Melbourne Tower to Change Color with the Weather The 40-story building under construction at 888 Collins Street, Victoria Harbour, will be linked to the Bureau of Meteorology and light up every half-hour in a dazzling display that changes with the current weather. The tower will be illuminated by 50-meter-high vertical beams of LED light. City Planning Commission Approves Evacuation Elevators In NYC The Fire, Buildings, and City Planning Departments in New York are writing rules to govern what are called “occupant-evacuation elevators” — cars that can be used to move people down in an emergency. Experts believe that this is a necessary motion as extremely tall skyscrapers continue to pierce the skyline. Industrial Johannesburg Tower to Become Plant-Covered Apartments Architects have unveiled a proposal to transform a 1970s-era industrial building in Johannesburg into luxury apartments and a hotel, with balconies covered in plants. Set to complete in May 2016, the Hallmark House redevelopment is the first in a series of projects planned for the area. Paris Receives First Housing Project Reaching 50 Meters Since 1970s Earlier in 2015, French architects completed the first housing project of 50 meters to be built in Paris since the 1970s. The project connects the strict rigidity of the neighboring Avenue de France, the entrance to the adjacent Ivry suburb and ultimately, the transition from a linear city to a vertical one. News from the Council Leader’s Message: Timothy Johnson Tall buildings must find ways to integrate horizontally into their urban surroundings and provide a greater diversity of use and variety of spaces as they rise vertically.
